Frequently, I notice where bloggers have overlooked choosing an appropriate category for a new post. WordPress includes in the default installation a ‘catch-all’ category for these posts and, unimaginatively, it is called ‘uncategorized’.
I am a great believer in making blogs unique and therefore as far as possible seek to avoid using these default settings. Furthermore, from an optimization perspective, using the vanilla ‘uncategorized’ passes up the opportunity to include something relevant to the content of the blog.
So, I recommend renaming the ‘uncategorized’ category to something unique but relevant to your blog. This can be done by navigating to the Posts -> Categories section of the wp-admin area and editing the category name and category slug of the ‘uncategorized’ category there.
If you already have solid content on your blog, and some of it in your ‘uncategorized’ category, and are worried about the effect of this change then if you use either the Platinum SEO Pack or All-in-one-SEO, they will automatically 301 redirect incoming requests.
